Conjugation

Ru-verbs

Drop る and add られる.

  • 食べる → 食べられる
  • 見る → 見られる

U-verbs

Change final う to あ and add れる.

  • 書く → 書かれる
  • 呼ぶ → 呼ばれる
  • 読む → 読まれる

Irregular

  • する → される
  • 来る → 来られる

Usage

Suffering Passive

The subject is negatively affected by the action.

私は猫にパンを食べられた。 - I had my bread eaten by the cat.
電車で足を踏まれた。 - I had my foot stepped on in the train.
財布を盗まれた。 - I had my wallet stolen.

Regular Passive

Simply describes who received the action.

この本は多くの人に読まれている。 - This book is read by many people.
彼は先生に呼ばれた。 - He was called by the teacher.
雨に降られた。 - I got rained on.
