How to express what you want to do, or suggest doing something together.

Expressing Desire (たい form)

To say “I want to…”, use the たい ending. It conjugates like an i-adjective.

  1. Use the verb stem (drop ます).
  2. Add たい.
()べたい。I want to eat.
()みたい。I want to drink.
映画(えいが)()たい。I want to watch a movie.

Negative

Drop い and add くない.

()べたくない。I don't want to eat.
()きたくない。I don't want to go.
(かえ)りたくない。I don't want to go home.

Making Suggestions (Volitional Form)

Used to say “Let’s…” or “Shall we?”.

ます-form (Polite)

Replace ます with ましょう.

()きましょう。Let's go.
()べましょう。Let's eat.
(はじ)めましょう。Let's begin.

Dictionary Form (Casual)

Ru-verbs: Drop る, add よう.
()べる → ()べよう
U-verbs: Change last う to お and add う.
()く → ()こう
()べよう。Let's eat.
()こう。Let's go.
(あそ)ぼう。Let's play.
