敬語(けいご) (keigo) is split into two main categories:尊敬(そんけい)語(ご) (sonkeigo - honorific) and 謙譲(けんじょう)語(ご) (kenjougo - humble).

尊敬(そんけい)語(ご) (Honorific Form)

Used to describe the actions of superiors or customers. Elevates the subject.

Regular Formation

お + Verb Stem + になる.

先生(せんせい)がお読(よ)みになる。The teacher reads.

社長(しゃちょう)がお帰(かえ)りになった。The president went home.

お客様(きゃくさま)がお待(ま)ちになっている。The customer is waiting.

謙譲(けんじょう)語(ご) (Humble Form)

Used to describe your own actions when speaking to a superior. Lowers yourself.

Regular Formation

お + Verb Stem + する.

私(わたし)がお持(も)ちします。I will hold it.

私(わたし)がお送(おく)りします。I will send it.

明日(あした)お伺(うかが)いします。I will visit tomorrow.
