Negative Verbs

Vocabulary

  1. 食べる 【た・べる】 (ru-verb) – to eat
  2. 見る 【み・る】 (ru-verb) – to see
  3. 書く 【か・く】 (u-verb) – to write
  4. 読む 【よ・む】 (u-verb) – to read
  5. 会う 【あ・う】 (u-verb) – to meet
  6. する (irregular) – to do
  7. 来る 【く・る】 (irregular) – to come
  8. ある (u-verb) – to exist (inanimate)
  9. いる (ru-verb) – to exist (animate)

To say that you do not do something, you conjugate the verb into its negative form.

Ru-verbs

Drop る and add ない.

  • 食べる → 食べない - not eat
  • 見る → 見ない - not see
  • 起きる → 起きない - not wake up

U-verbs

Change the last vowel from an う sound to an あ sound, and add ない.

  • 書く → 書かない - not write
  • 読む → 読まない - not read
  • 話す → 話さない - not speak
  • 会う → 会わない - not meet (Exception: う becomes わ)

Irregular Verbs

  • する → しない - not do
  • 来る → 来ない - not come

Non-Existence

The verb for existence of inanimate objects is ある. Its negative is NOT あらない, but simply ない.

Examples 

本がない。 - There is no book.
時間がない。 - There is no time.
お金がない。 - There is no money.
