Volitional Form + とする

“Try to…” or “About to…”

寝(ね)ようとしたとき、電話(でんわ)が鳴(な)った。Just when I was about to sleep, the phone rang.

出(で)かけようとしたら、雨(あめ)が降(ふ)り始(はじ)めた。Just as I was about to go out, it started raining.

食(た)べようとしたとき、誰(だれ)かが来(き)た。Just when I was about to eat, someone came.

逃(に)げようとしている。He's trying to escape.

ドアを開(あ)けようとしている。I'm trying to open the door.

何(なに)か言(い)おうとしているね。You're trying to say something, aren't you?

立(た)とうとしたが、できなかった。I tried to stand, but couldn't.
