Suru and Naru

Vocabulary

1. なる (u-verb) – to become
2. する (irregular) – to do, to make
3. 先生 【せん・せい】 – teacher
4. きれい (na-adj) – pretty, clean
5. 熱い 【あつ・い】 (i-adj) – hot

Two very common verbs for describing change are する (to do/make) and なる (to become).

なる (To Become)

Used with the particle に (for nouns/na-adj) or く (for i-adj).

With Nouns / Na-adjectives

Add に before なる.

先生になる。 - Become a teacher.
きれいになる。 - Become pretty/clean.
静かになった。 - It became quiet.

With I-adjectives

Drop the い and add く.

熱くなる。 - Become hot.
大きくなった。 - It became big.
暗くなってきた。 - It's getting dark.

する (To Make / Decide)

Used similarly with に or く to mean making something act in that way, or deciding on something.

“To Make”

部屋をきれいにする。 - Make the room clean.
音を大きくする。 - Make the sound louder.
テレビを静かにする。 - Make the TV quiet.

“To Decide on”

これにします。 - I will decide on this one. (Ordering at a restaurant)
コーヒーにします。 - I'll have coffee.
明日にしましょう。 - Let's make it tomorrow.
