While the dictionary form is used for casual speech among friends, the polite form is essential for speaking to strangers, teachers, or coworkers.

The ます Stem

To create the polite form, you first need the “stem” of the verb.

Ru-verbs

Drop the る.

• 食べる → 食べ
• 見る → 見

U-verbs

Change the final う vowel sound to an い sound.

• 行く → 行き
• 飲む → 飲み
• 遊ぶ → 遊び
