The ます Stem

To create the polite form, you first need the “stem” of the verb.

Ru-verbs

Drop the る.

食(た)べる→食(た)べ

見(み)る→見(み)

U-verbs

Change the final う vowel sound to an い sound.

行(い)く→行(い)き

飲(の)む→飲(の)み

遊(あそ)ぶ→遊(あそ)び
