How to express what you want to do, or suggest doing something together.
Expressing Desire (たい form)
To say “I want to…”, use the たい ending. It conjugates like an i-adjective.
- Use the verb stem (drop ます).
- Add たい.
食べたい。I want to eat.
飲みたい。I want to drink.
映画を見たい。I want to watch a movie.
Negative
Drop い and add くない.
食べたくない。I don't want to eat.
行きたくない。I don't want to go.
帰りたくない。I don't want to go home.
Making Suggestions (Volitional Form)
Used to say “Let’s…” or “Shall we?”.
ます-form (Polite)
Replace ます with ましょう.
行きましょう。Let's go.
食べましょう。Let's eat.
始めましょう。Let's begin.
Dictionary Form (Casual)
Ru-verbs: Drop る, add よう.
食べる → 食べよう
U-verbs: Change last う to お and add う.
行く → 行こう
食べよう。Let's eat.
行こう。Let's go.
遊ぼう。Let's play.
