“It is supposed to be…” based on calculation or logic.

この答(こた)えは正(ただ)しいはずだ。This answer should be correct.

彼女(かのじょ)は知(し)っているはずがない。There's no way she knows.

Negative: はずがない

そんなはずがない。That can't be right.

失敗(しっぱい)するはずがない。There's no way it will fail.

べき (Ought to)

“One should…” based on duty or morals.

約束(やくそく)は守(まも)るべきだ。One should keep promises.

人(ひと)を傷(きず)つけるべきではない。One should not hurt others.

学生(がくせい)は勉強(べんきょう)すべきだ。Students should study.

Negative: べきではない

嘘(うそ)をつくべきではない。One should not lie.

彼(かれ)を責(せ)めるべきではない。You shouldn't blame him.
